A mobile screen service is the best option if you want to buy screens that fit tight on the doors and windows.  The reason is that a screen shop is not going to make the screens at the job site.  This is a problem when making screens because after measuring a screen frame most of the time it has to be cut multiple times due to encasement’s being of square.  Some shops will say that all you need is to measure once but, we know that it does not matter how good someone may be measuring screens they always have to be tried on before putting the mesh on them.  A mobile screen service cost a bit more but the results are much much better.  A shop will measure once, make the screens and that’s what you get.  A mobile screens service is custom that’s the difference CUSTOM.

Door and Window screens encasement’s are off-square

Most window encasement’s are off-square and screens have to be made custom made to fit.  In all my years in the mobile screens business I would say that 95% off all window and door encasement’s are off-square, especially new homes!  New homes seem to be thrown tether in a snap of a finger and the results are a home that needs a lot of custom work done to it.  Aways make sure you measure the area for a screen for before picking one up.  Remember not to trust that it looks standard size, because 95% of the time it won’t be.

Calling a mobile screen company

When calling a mobile screen company make sure they service your area and do the actual screen work on-site.  Also try to have the screens done on-site and not in a shop this will assure a much better fitting screen.

Do all mobile screen jobs get done on-site?

No, it is not possible to do all jobs on the spot, on some custom jobs we have to order the material and this may take a few days to receive.  Once the material is in then the job should be done on-site no problem.

How long does it take for a mobile service to come out?

This depends on the mobile screen service you choose, typically it should not take longer than a week.  The longest we like to take if we are busy is no more than a couple of days.

Do mobile screen companies come out for small jobs?

This also depends on the company you choose.  Normally there is a minimum charge, we do not have a minimum charge but do have a minimum of a couple of screens to go out and work on.  We are flexible and like to work with all our future clients.

 There are four things that make a window screen and they are:

  • Screen mesh (fiber glass)
  • Aluminum corners (for miter cut frames)
  • splyne (the rubber that holds the screen in place)

  • Screen splyne roller (for rolling in splyne)
  • Flat head screw driver (for pushing in corners)
  • Box cutter blade (for cutting excess splyne and screen)
  • Saw or electric chop saw (for cutting aluminum frame)
  • clamps (for holding frame in place on a table)

Measuring

Measuring the opening where the screen goes is very important.  If you have aluminum or vinyl encasement’s with channels for the screen then the rule is you have to measure from the inside of the channel to the the outside of the opposite channel and then deduct 1/8.  This will ensure you that the screen will have room to be taken in and out.  If you have double hung wood windows then measure top to bottom and side to side and deduct 1/8 to 1/4 from the width and from the length.

Building it

Once the frame is cut and put together with the corners then you must screen it.  For this you will need a table to work on.  Place the frame on the table and roll the screen over it, then roll in the splyne with the screen splyne tool.  You may need to to this a couple of times to get the screen straight, do not do it to tight that the frame is con-caving in .  After you’re done and satisfied with your screen be very careful and cut out all the excess screen away from the frame and you are done.

We always recommend you use a Licensed Professional when doing this type of work and always be extra careful with all tools.

What are the best Screen doors on the market?

 Extruded Aluminum  Swinging Screen Doors

The best swinging door for areas with a lot of traffic is the Extruded aluminum screen door, with a strong hydraulic shock absorber or heavy duty pneumatic closer with shock spring, it is heavy duty and extremely sturdy.  This door comes in many colors but make sure you get a baked enamel finish.  This is the best finish because it does not chip or fade and stay in excellent condition for years.  The finishes come in original silver anodized or grey anodized, white, bronze, tan, black and some others.

Roll Form Swinging Screen Doors

Then you have the Roll form Swinging screen door which is a little less expensive and can get the job done. They are very light gauge aluminum and not very sturdy.  If you need a screen door somewhere in your home that is not going to get a lot of traffic going through it, then you might consider the Roll form swinging screen door.  My advice is if you have kids or pets do not buy a roll form screen door, it wont last as long ans a Extruded screen door.

Wood Screen Doors

Wood screen doors are very nice and come in many finishes.  The problem with wood screen doors is they warp.  Wood need to be maintained and unless you know of a good handyman I would strongly suggest you stay away from wood screen doors.

The best sliding screen door for a lot of traffic is the Extruded aluminum sliding screen door, It is heavy duty and extremely sturdy.  You can also get this door in a few different finishes and make sure that it is a baked enamel finish so you can make sure that it will last you for years without chipping or fading.  you can ad a pet door which will protect the bottom portion of the screen from tearing.  this is called a pet protector or pet grille.  Make sure the sliding screen door comes with all metal parts, especially the rollers, handle and lock latch.  One of the key things to look out for is metal ball bearing rollers and a thick frame gauge, if you have this you should be O.K.

Roll form sliding screen doors

Avoid Roll form sliding screen doors like the plague, they will only frustrate you every time you have to open them.  I do not recommend buying these light weight usually made out of tin or steal screen doors.

The front door is a problem when it comes to deciding if a family wants to sacrifice it for a screen door.  Usually clients don’t want to loose the look of there pretty and very expensive front door because  a regular swinging screen door is permanent and swings open and does block the look of the front door.  In this scenario I can explain what your options are and that is, the retractable screen door. This will help kill two birds with the same stone.  You get a beautiful screen door that lets the cross breeze in without any unwanted guests, like the fly’s. Curb appeal? You can’t see it, it’s pretty much invisible. This is where it got it’s name “invisible screen”

Another great option is a swinging screen door with no design or push bars. Another area that customers need screens for is the sliding screen door, also known as the patio screen door. Here customers have two choices really that will work properly, sliding screens doors and retractable screens doors. They both work great and get the job done. It all comes down to what kind of use, or should I say abuse will this door be getting and how many people will be going thru it and how many times per day. In most cases you cant compare the activity a screen door gets from a single retired person that goes in and out thru the door 3 or 4 times in a day to a family of 6 that go thru the same door 20 times per day. Always get someone that has good experience to recommend what’s best for you and ask questions on what you’re buying.  Remember that going for the cheapest sometimes can be more expensive.  You don’t want to be going to the hardware store every time spring comes around because your screen door didn’t make it
